Diminished value, commonly referred to as DV, describes the loss in a vehicle’s market value due to damage and repair. There are three main types of DV that can cause a vehicle to lose value. The first is inherent DV, which is market value loss due to accident-related losses. Additionally, substandard repairs and insurance claim practices can contribute to losses in a vehicle’s market value.

Diminished value assessments play an important role in insurance claims. Because the financial responsibility of DV claims falls on either the person who caused the accident or their insurance company, it is very important that accurate assessments are provided.
