IRC Selects Earth Enterprise To Design And Produce Its Annual Report

The International Rescue Committee focuses on serving the humanitarian needs of refugees globally. Funding for the IRC is provided by individuals, foundations, corporations and governments. The IRC Annual report enables donors and potential donors to get a close-up, detailed visual and editorial window into the dedicated IRC staff, and the people who need their help the most.

The IRC team tasked Earth Enterprise with making the 2018 Annual Report really stand out; how to tell the many stories of those they support, by creating a visually impactful piece, that would exceed the previous years report success. The Goal: Increase Donor participation. A neuroscience experiment conducted by Millward Brown studying the effects of printed material versus electronic media concluded that: “Physical materials produced more brain response connected with internal feelings, suggesting greater ‘internalization’ of the ads.”

The 2018 IRC Annual report utilizes multiple sensory triggers, according to the company. The whole piece is cased in a brown kraft recycled envelope, making it look like a package that needs opening. The recipient is enticed to open the hidden item, just to see what is inside. While pulling the book out of the envelope, the reader immediately notices the cover is gritty; It actually feels like it is covered in sand. It is actually sand… that was spot applied on the outside cover, triggering the recipients’ touch receptors. As a reader’s fingers travel over the sand, towards a pictured young boys head, their fingers drop down and slide as though on ice over the image. The boys' image is debossed from the sand, adding a spot gloss coating over the image. At this point, the recipient’s brains triggers a “look deeper”, opening the book to see what’s inside this magical piece (https://earthenterprise.com/new-york-city-offset-printing/annual-report-printing-in-new-york-city/).

The reader is then engaged by the Presidents Message. It is conveyed using an easy to read font, style, leading and size. Wanting to know more, the reader turns the page, and exposes a torn page. This technique is carried out twice more throughout the report. The reader runs their fingers over the torn page, turns it to see the other side on auto pilot. From the outset, Earth Enterprise’s dedicated designers and craftspeople focused their attention on driving a physical reaction – from a printed medium. The result is an award winning, thought inducing, donation generating piece of art; one which inspires action and hope for Rescuing Lives Worldwide.
