As representatives of the Maggie Flanigan Studio state, while this one-day workshop will merely cover the basics of acting and the Meisner technique, it will be a unique opportunity where Philadelphia residents will get to explore their curiosity of the art form before deciding whether or not they want to dive into an acting career. It represents a remarkable opportunity for those considering such a career, given the indecisiveness that often afflicts prospective students who cannot decide whether or not they wish to commit to a full-length acting course. This one-day acting workshop will be led by Charlie Sandlan, who is the Executive Director, Head of Acting, and an instructor at the Maggie Flanigan Studio.

Sandlan says, "The majority of aspiring actors have no clue about acting as an art form. They invest cheaply into their business with little or no training, bounce around for 3-5 years and then quit and do something else with their life." Sandlan states that, aside from the scheduled topics of instruction, he expects to guide, advise and answer any of his student's questions, providing them with the knowledge necessary to decide whether or not it would be fruitful for them to pursue an acting career. The topics that will be covered at the one day-acting course in Philadelphia include all of the fundamentals necessary to pursue a successful acting career. This includes learning about an actor’s placement of concentration, the importance of vulnerability as well as spontaneity and why these qualities are key to freedom and authenticity in acting. It will also cover how actors may get attention away from themselves and into other people to make scenes flow seamlessly. Some of the other topics to be covered include the history of acting, the most important skills that actors need to master and the factors that separate a professional actor from amateurs as well the gap between these two stages may be bridged.

All of the foundations taught during the workshop will be based on the Meisner technique, which is regarded as one of the greatest acting techniques ever developed. Actors trained under the Meisner technique learn the ability to truthfully perform an imaginary circumstance, rather than indicate and pretend. The main difference between this and other techniques is that actors learn to create organic and vivid behavior, helping them understand the proper place of emotion in the actor’s experience. The Meisner technique also stands out for teaching actors the important questions that must be answered when breaking down a script, helping bring their spontaneity and authenticity to the text. While most of this only taught in a full-length course, the Philadelphia acting course will cover the basics of this technique.
