Professional One-Day Meisner Technique Acting Workshop in Washington DC Announced

The Meisner Technique Studio: Washington DC and the Maggie Flanigan Studio have proudly announced a one-day professional acting workshop to be held in Washington DC. This one-day workshop is an introduction to the Meisner technique, and to the essential requirements needed to be an actor. The workshop is aimed at anyone who is interested in the possibility of becoming an actor and at those who know that acting is the right choice for them but do not know where to start.

Many who love the idea of acting will have acted before at school or college and are serious in wanting to act as a career. Others may be intrigued by the possibility of acting part-time or full-time but are not sure whether acting is for them. Changing career is a big step and most people considering such a step are nervous about taking the plunge. The one-day workshop will enable them to get a taste of what acting is all about and help them to decide whether it is the right choice of career.

Charlie Sandlan, Maggie Flanagan’s Executive Director and Head of Acting, said, “Most actors don't begin their training with the desire to be a first-rate artist. That desire comes from discovering the struggle it takes to be good at something and a growing appreciation of how much hard work it takes to create the perfect illusion of life, again and again.”

The acting workshop in Washington, DC will introduce students to the fundamentals they will need to start their career and to the Meisner technique. The Meisner technique is considered one of the greatest acting techniques ever developed and is an approach developed by Sanford Meisner, an American theatre practitioner. The technique trains an actor to focus more on other factors rather than their internal thoughts or feelings associated with their character. The focus of the Meisner technique is for an actor to "get out of their head," so that the actor is behaving instinctively to the surrounding environment instead.

In addition to the Meisner technique, students will be taught the basics they will need. They will learn about the history of acting and the skills they will need to master and, of course, what separates the professional actor from the amateur. They will be taught to understand why listening is the most important tool in an actor’s skill set. They will be shown the importance of spontaneity and vulnerability and why they are key to both freedom and authenticity in acting.

Nicolina York, who has attended a previous course, said, “Maggie Flanigan is such a safe place for an actor to do their best to be vulnerable and creative. Every day at the Studio was a different discovery, different emotion, different world. This training opened a door I never knew existed. I can’t wait to go back and do the two-year program."

The one-day workshop will be an opportunity for anyone curious about acting not only to learn some of the skills needed, but to have their questions answered truthfully. Those interested in becoming an actor should call (202) 517-8020 to register.

It is not just one-day workshops that are available, though. There are also intensive summer acting programs for adults NYC for those wishing to gain a further understanding of the techniques needed to become a serious actor. The six-week summer course provides students with the opportunity to experience and learn more about the Meisner technique. The Maggie Flanigan Studio believes that even a brief summer course can actually teach and provide something of great value to students. Students who approach the course with the right attitude can learn much from six weeks of hard, dedicated work.

The summer sessions approach the class with the same high standards expected of the studio’s conservatory students. Six weeks may not seem to be a very long time and of course it is short when compared to the studio’s two-year programs, but even so students will learn to break away from the issues that plague untrained actors. The difference between trained and untrained can be the “make or break” factor for an actor’s career.
