Rupert Friend, Paula Patton and Each Braff Begin Work on Tiburon

New York, NY (March 5th, 2020) - Culmination Productions in Los Angeles has announced they are in pre-production of a new “shark meets horror” thriller, thanks to producers Tom Butterfield and Harry White. Tiburon is expected to begin shooting in South Africa this spring and will star Paula Patton (Traffik), Rupert Friend (Homeland, The Death of Stalin), and Zach Braff (Scrubs, Garden State). The film's director is Alistair Legrand (The Diabolical).

Tiburon is the story of a family caught in a massive flood who end up camped out on top of a van surrounded by sharks. They encounter a dangerous fugitive and must decide between taking on the challenge of a violent foe or shark-infested waters. The screenplay was written by Jonathan W.C. Mills, who wrote the horror film "Nothing to Fear" (2013). Mills will also co-produce. The story is likely to be reminiscent of "Crawl,” which features lots of flooding and terror-filled underwater attack scenes.

Tiburon, Spanish for shark, is the third thriller genre film for Paula Patton, after taking roles in "Mirrors" in 2008 and "Traffik" in 2018. The movie also stars Rupert Friend, best known for his work in the television series Homeland, and his role in the satirical comedy "The Death of Stalin" (2017) with Steve Buscemi, Simon Russel Beale, and Jeffrey Tambor. Friend more recently starred in "A Simple Favor" (2018) with Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick. Zach Braff rounds out the cast. Braff has extensive TV credits and has starred in and directed dozens of feature films. His acting credits include "The Dubious Battle" (2016), and he directed the critically acclaimed movie set in New Jersey “Garden State” (2004). Braff has two new features coming out in 2020, "Percy" and "The Comeback Trail."

Tiburon was put out to international buyers at the European Film Market in February. CAA will represent the American rights to the film. A production schedule and shooting dates have not yet been made public.
