Providence Health Plans Excludes Telemedicine and Naturopathic Doctors

While many doctors are currently embracing telemedicine in observance of social distancing brought about by the COVID-19 threats, not all insurance companies are covering this service.

Among those who have excluded this kind of service is Providence Health Plans.

This exclusion comes at a time when the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has expanded Medicare coverage to include telemedicine. The CMS also waived possible patient privacy violations done in "good faith" while using technology during the coronavirus pandemic.

"Sadly, Providence decided to exclude this service, which is a very effective way of assisting patients during special circumstances when social distancing is highly recommended," said Augusto Beato, CEO of a Portland-based digital marketing firm, Portland SEO.

Doctors are currently experimenting with various apps, including the Zoom platform to assist patients.

Just last week, the Washington State Medical Association tried to persuade sent Gov. Jay Inslee to encourage health insurance firms to reimburse telehealth services at the same amount paid to as office appointments.

Beato noted that Providence Health Plans also excludes naturopathic medicine from coverage.

"While naturopathic doctors are usually covered by major insurance plans in Oregon, it's best to contact your health insurance provider to .learn more about your naturopathic coverage," Beato pointed out.

Many insurance plans allow reimbursement after full payment for the naturopathic services and supplements. To avail of reimbursements, patients are required to provide a service summary from their naturopathic doctors.
