What Patients Must Know About Obtaining Emergency Dental Care During The COVID-19 Pandemic

Moon Township, PA - With many dental offices completely closed to patients during the COVID-19 pandemic and others only open for emergency cases, it’s imperative patients have the information they need in case of a dental emergency.

GPC Surgery Pittsburgh PA

Dr. Joseph Goth, a dentist who is not only an expererienced oral and maxillofacial surgeon but also holds an M.D. degree, understands the importance of this information on multiple levels. His practice, GPC Oral Surgery and Dental Implant Center of Western Pennsylvania, like so many others, is currently only seeing dental emergencies.

Dr. Goth wants patients to understand the importance of seeing a dentist rather than going to the hospital. He explains, “First of all, please don’t go to your local emergency room with a dental problem. The hospitals are already filled to capacity with folks who are ill with the coronavirus and you don’t want to put more of a burden on them than they already have. Plus, you run the risk of being exposed just by going to the hospital.”

Many may wonder what exactly is a dental emergency. Dr. Goth advises patients this way, “A dental emergency is one of these three things: pain that can’t be easily controlled with an over the counter pain reliever, swelling of your oral tissues or face, or infection which would mean you have redness, heat in the area, maybe drainage of infected pus and also you might have a fever. If you have any one or a combination of these things, then you definitely need to be seen.”

Dr. Goth also advises patients to be sure their provider is following all the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines so patients are protected. He and his staff implement all the guidelines such as wearing masks, face shields, using disposable gowns, sterile gloves and meticulously cleaning and disinfecting both equipment and furnishing such as countertops between patients. He explains also that his practice takes extra precautions to make absolutely sure his patients are safe by staggering appointments so there is only one patient in the waiting room at a time.

While many practices have a policy only to see people who are already established patients in their practice, Dr. Goth has opened his doors to anyone who has a dental emergency and needs to be seen, even people who do not live in the immediate area. His practice also accepts any type of payment including dental insurance, credit cards or cash.

Dr. Goth, who was raised in the cowboy country of rural Wyoming, says that he strives to bring the influence of his humble background to his practice. “I want folks to understand that we are not stuffy and formal like some dental offices. We are friendly, congenial people who are here to serve. During this time of need, we are opening our doors to schedule patients with dental emergencies from 9am to 1pm Monday, Wednesday and Fridays.”
