Chantilly, Virginia based Stone Ridge Montessori is pleased to announce that the school was still able to push through with their annual Teacher Appreciation Week despite the COVID-19 pandemic. The school was able to carry out this task through online means.
In the face of not being able to go to school due to the pandemic, Stone Ridge Montessori’s students still got to show their love and appreciation for their teachers through short video video clips as part of the annual Teacher Appreciation week. Some of these video clips were featured on the preschool's Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/StoneRidgeMontessori/videos/835803916910783/. Aside from holding their Teacher Appreciation Week online, the preschool was also successfully able to facilitate learning during this period by holding Zoom classes for their students. The school holds daily Zoom classes that have several scheduled segments, such as circle time, story time, music movement and Reggio.
Laurette Lander, a representative of the school, says, “We acknowledge that it is important to give the children a sense of normalcy despite the pandemic. This can be done by retaining some of the routines they used to have in their lives, such as attending classes. Due to this reason, our school has decided to push through with our online classes. We also made sure to include a variety of segments in our classes in order to make it as similar as possible to real life classes. This variety in class segments also helps target and improve several development areas in our children.”
In addition, Stone Ridge Montessori School makes an effort to show their students’ parents how they may help entertain and educate their children at home during quarantine season. On their Facebook page, the school shares fun, indoor activities, such as DIYs. The school also shares articles on topics that are essential for parents, such as ways on how to become closer to their children, the importance of sensory development in children and techniques to incorporate Montessori learning at home.
As noted on the school’s website at https://www.stoneridgemontessori.com, Montessori is a method of education that was developed over a hundred years ago by Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian physician and educator. The main foundation of this method of education is based on self-directed activities and hands-on and sensory-based learning as well as collaborative play. In Montessori classrooms, children are encouraged to make creative choices in their learning, while the classroom and the highly trained teacher offer age-appropriate activities to guide the process. Children work independently or in groups to discover and explore knowledge of the world on their own to develop their maximum potential.
Some specific characteristics of Montessori education listed by Stone Ridge Montessori are mixed-age classrooms, freedom of movement within the classroom, uninterrupted blocks of work time, specialized Montessori educational materials, freedom to choose own work materials, hands-on learning and a highly-trained Montessori teacher.
The Stone Ridge Montessori School is proud to be an AdvancED accredited Montessori school, which has been a part of the Aldie and Stone Ridge communities since 2009. The school offers programs for children ages 10 months – 12 years. The school also offers an After School Care program for children ages 6 – 12 years. Lander adds, “Being the area's only “AdvancED” accredited traditional Montessori school is both an honor and a responsibility. As such, we are heavily committed to providing our students with only the very best.
