Dr. Gorman and Texas Breast Center Share Their COVID Prevention Efforts

The Texas Breast Center has posted an article about the efforts and policies implemented in office and pre-procedure. As a breast cancer treatment center, they know their patients are already going through a challenging time and that this pandemic is only making it more stressful. These new policies are meant to minimize risk to both patients and staff while continuing appointments and surgeries.

Telemedicine and Virtual Waiting Room options offer long-distance communications and encourage social distancing. For in-person appointments, screenings are required at every door for patients, staff, and visitors, and everyone must wear a mask. The screening process consists of a check for any temperatures above 99.6 F as well as asking about potential COVID-19 symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, or others. If the patient answers yes to the questions or has a fever, they will be quickly moved to a separate, designated area, to prevent the spread of infection. If a visitor has a fever or answers, yes, health services will be offered. If the visitor does not need them at that time, we will request that they return home and contact their primary care doctor.

In the case of surgical patients, more extensive screening has been put in place. The patient must record any potential symptoms of COVID-19 in the five days leading up to the scheduled procedure. Forty-eight hours before the surgery, they will be directed to have a COVID test. The patient’s medical healthcare team will examine the results and, depending on the patient’s specific healthcare needs, will determine how the scheduling will proceed.

Visitor allowances have also changed with the new Safe Care plan, with only one visitor per patient.

Dr. Gorman and the Texas Breast Center are implementing these changes in the effort to best care for their patients safely and ease some of their stress at this time.
