Sunday evening, January 26, 2020, Teri Roiger brings her Quartet to the NYC venue Cafe Bohemia in celebration of her birthday and also celebrating LADIES IN SATIN: Music of Billie Holiday and Abbey Lincoln.
Teri Roiger (www.teriroiger.com) is a singer who has championed the repertoire of Billie Holiday and Abbey Lincoln, among others. Her delivery is understated, her phrasing unique and her focus on Lincoln’s and Holiday’s signature nuances, as well as exploring the under-recorded work of these two legends, give her performances clarity of focus and a touch of elegance.
On Sunday, January 26, she will be joined by James Weidman on piano, John Menegon on bass, and Steve Williams on drums. This trio has performed numerous times with Ms. Roiger and they mesh together like the full moon and a starry sky.
James Weidman is one of the most versatile pianists in the world of music. He performed for many years with Abbey Lincoln and currently performs with Joe Lovano among many others. Well known for his versatility, he is hailed as "unfailingly lyrical," "convivially assertive," and "exquisite.”
A longtime pianist in Ms. Roiger's bands, Weidman’s style complements the voice perfectly.
Bassist John Menegon’s tenure with legendary saxophonists David “Fathead” Newman and Dewey Redman, as well as Steve Williams 20+ years with the late, great Shirley Horn, round out the rhythm section. With all the experience of Weidman, Menegon & Williams, expect a dynamic evening of inventive, spontaneous musicianship.
This Is Teri Roiger’s 1st appearance at the newly re-opened iconic Cafe Bohemia. She is most known for her interpretations of the music of Abbey Lincoln, Billy Strayhorn, Billie Holiday, and Thelonoius Monk, as well as the Great American Songbook.
January 26 will focus on the music of Billie Holiday and Abbey Lincoln and will no doubt include a few originals penned by Ms. Roiger, herself a lyricist, composer and winner of numerous music awards.
Founder and curator of the newly re-opened Cafe Bohemia, Christine Santelli has created a club that speaks to the beauty of a space dedicated to honest jazz, both modern and traditional.
An inviting basement jazz club with excellent wines, specialty cocktails, draught beer, sandwiches, salads, and small bites, and an excellent sound system, Cafe Bohemia is a true jazz club and venue, located in the heart of Greenwich Village in NYC.
Street parking and garage parking is available nearby.
A listening room and lounge, the newly re-opened Jazz club draws inspiration from the original Cafe Bohemia, which initially opened in 1955 and was frequently visited by Charlie Parker.
The musicians who actually played there include the Miles Davis Quintet, Art Blakey’s Original Jazz Messengers, and Kenny Dorham’s Jazz Prophets. Jazz Bassist Oscar Pettiford wrote the song “Bohemia After Dark” in the spirit of the club.
This listening room is a place for music lovers to have an intimate experience with the artists who are performing. Cafe Bohemia is a musical environment for musicians and as such, non-musicians get the benefit of no-frills, excellent musical listening to the heart's content. Walk into the club, get there early, and relax into the musical creativity.
"Teri has an intuitive laid back sense of time reminiscent of Abbey Lincoln and Betty Carter but with her own uniqueness," says Jack DeJohnette (Legendary Jazz Drummer & 2012 NEA Jazz Master).
"Teri Roiger has a voice like the finest bittersweet chocolate full of rich, dark, contradicting flavors that miraculously blend to create one of the most original vocal instruments in decades," says Vic Garbarini, Playboy Magazine.
"To hear Teri Roiger is to experience that peculiarly beautiful combination of improvisation, tone, feeling, and phrasing that are distinct elements of jazz freedom. She is made for those who still understand the meaning of the term 'the real thing'..." says Stanley Crouch, Author, Cultural Critic & 2019 NEA Jazz Master.
