Anaheim, California – In commemoration of Black Balloon Day, Anaheim Lighthouse, a residential facility offering drug and alcohol recovery services in Anaheim, California, will be hanging black balloons all over Lighthouse campuses on March 6, 2020.
Black Balloon Day has become a national movement aimed at creating awareness of drug overdose deaths, which is one of the leading causes of accidental deaths in the United States. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 69,000 people died of a drug overdose from February 2018 to February 2019 with more than 75% of the deaths caused by opioids.
According to Michael Bumpus, a Lighthouse alumnus and alumni outreach representative, it is important to raise awareness that overdose is a harsh reality of drug abuse.
“The fact is that no matter where you come from or how you use it, an overdose can happen to anyone at any moment. There is no safe way to abuse drugs and you or anyone you love could be taken away in a moment from overdosing,” said Bumpus.
Jocel Bibera, alumni relations coordinator of the Lighthouse, said that the simple gesture of hanging black balloons on March 6th is also their way of remembering the lives lost to addiction, specifically drug overdoses.
“As a person in recovery myself, and working in the addiction field, we often receive those haunting phone calls of past clients or even friends and peers, who have lost their lives to drug abuse. We will be hanging black balloons all over the Lighthouse facility to create awareness and also to pay tribute to these lost lives,” said Bibera.
Matthew Toohey, another Lighthouse alumnus and alumni outreach representative, shared that having lost some friends to addiction, he hopes that bringing awareness could help prevent more lost lives.
“I have lost friends to addiction that I never expected would lose their lives at such a young age. Not many people may realize that drugs are changing and becoming more dangerous. With higher potency opiates being produced now, you never know if your next use will be your last. Taking part in awareness campaigns such as Black Balloon Day can hopefully help save a life,” said Toohey.
